Week 1: Sad and Depressed Teenage Girl

Sad & Depressing Films/Music are MUCH Better than Hopeful & Happy Films/Music

As a teenage girl and movie addict, I watch about 4 movies a week. This week's movies of choice were; "I Believe in Unicorns", "Sweeny Todd", "Fantastic Planet", and "Beetlejuice Beetlejuice". On letterboxed these movies all lay within the 3-4 star point. But by far I connected with "I Believe in Unicorns" the most, especially with it taking the perspective of a teenage girl in 2014. This film was so off-putting but also very comforting within its chaos, due to how it portrayed this toxic male taking advantage of Divina (the main character). Yet, she still romanticizes the situation until she simply can't anymore. The film expresses this through forms of claymation, dreams, and real-time. But, overall this film was deeply saddening and depressing. Yet, I still thoroughly enjoyed the film and its creative adaptation because it made me feel something and emotionally connect with it. At the same time, I simply don't believe that a "happy and hopeful" film could provide the same deeply rooted emotional connection. The rest of the movies I watched this week were pretty much, just disappointing (besides Sweeny Todd which I only enjoyed due to the vocals, the plot follows with the rest of these movies as disappointing) The films did not dive into human emotion, with "Beetlejuice Beetlejuice" being a fun sequel that is all it is, fun. "Fantastic Planet" is beautifully animated and entertaining, but it still doesn't form a connection with the viewer. Overall there is a lack of deeply emotionally depressing films being made, and I'm done with seeing all these "happy" films in the movie theater. Bring back the sad, heartbreaking, and emo film renaissance!!!!

This week I have streamed a lot of music. Having played 370 minutes, 32 artists, and 100 tracks, this adds up to around 6 hours of music listened to. My top artists this week are; The Sundays, Faye Webster, and The Cranberries, and my top songs are; "We'll Never Have Sex", "(They Long To Be) Close To You", and "Thinking About You". There is one common theme throughout all these artists and songs being, their slow, sad, emotional songs. This genre of music just hits a certain spot in my brain forcing me to love it. These artists all are GREAT lyricists (Which as someone who prefers lyrics over beat is a very big deal for me). With lyrics such as, "Just like me, they long to be close to you", and "If I said you could never touch me. You'd come over and say I looked lovely."These songs just tend to speak to a different and deeper side of the listener than for example a rap song or a common pop song. They express a sense of longing, hope, and sorrow. In my opinion, I MUCH rather listen to music and cry than listen to music and be hyped up. Not to mention the huge jump in creativity from a pop song to a song like this. More creativity is required by the artist, with the lyrics, the melody, and the album concept. Albums such as "Atlanta Millionaire Club" and "Blind" have strong influences and vibes that I thoroughly enjoy, with very peaceful and slow vibes throughout the whole of the album. Overall sometimes I do stray away from more sorrowful indie music into screamo and rap occasionally but it's more to fit in with my friend's music taste than for pure enjoyment, but I can't control the fact that I just love slow depressing music even though my friends and family aren't huge fans I don't let that discourage me from playing and enjoying it.
